Photo montages tell a story the way a mosaic forms an image out of a bunch of tiles. This story is a mosaic formed from images, which form up into a narrative, either implicit or explicit. When you assemble a photo montage, you should choose important photos, photos of friends, family, loved ones, this is fine, but you can take it a few steps further!
Think of an idea you want to convey. Arrangement of your photos ought to follow from this. Don't just sprinkle the photos willy nilly! Pay careful attention to detail! Keep the golden ratio in mind. This is solid advice for anything involving proportions and ratios in the visual arts (Relevant links at the bottom). A bustling cosmopolitan montage might have a bunch of overlapping photos, while a montage of some close and important friends might be more spread out and evoke a small rural community or a sweet little garden.
Angles add something interesting to the montage, but don't overdo it. Too much angular movement causes stress and toothaches! And it will give you bad dreams. Keep it slight, but noticeable.
Photo montages can be done the old fashioned way, so that you can hang it up in your room somewhere, or you can do it on the computer for something that you can more easily share with friends far and near. Some programs that you can use for this have been listed below:
